Some where along the line I got elected as President of AT&T's Vet's Assoc DFW Chapter. We are co-sponsoring an event at the Dallas Zoo where active duty, reserves and retirees are admitted free with three guests with a valid military id. Our part in it is we are setting up a booth where we will putting together care packages to send over to the troops. We are aiming for 100 boxes.
If any of you are around please stop by and say hello.
Here is part of what we have collected so far:
The drink mixes -
Cracker Jacks (hey it has a sailor on it) -
Peanut butter cracker, in 2 flavors -
Cards, lip balm (donated by a company), and candy -
We also have a company donating a ton of chips and some other misc donations such as one kind soul who donated her late father's (a WWII vet) book collection, numbering around 10,000 books.
We have another group's chapter also collecting items such as jerky, gum, sunflower seeds and toothbrushes.
Again if you are at the Zoo please stop by and say hello. If you have a name, rank, unit and APO/FPO mailing address when you visit we will put together a box for the special person.
Thanks. From having served active and still in the reserves I get a good feeling for the isolation they go through. When you spend 6-9 months at sea anything from home is enjoyed.
Got the product in from Amy's work, she is an admin for promotional products. The flags are for putting around the area and the bracelets are for service members and gold star family. The blue ones say "Some Gave All" with stars on each side -
Jim, It is great that you are doing this, and I am guessing that the wrist bands and flags are from the American Legion. If you are looking for help, you might try contacting the local American Legion Post to see if they will help out, after all that is what we are around for (Yup, I'm a Legionnaire). The State of Wisconsin recently had a sedd off ceremoney for our 147th Aviation Battalion to Fort Hood for mobilization training before heading to Afghanistan for a year. The Legion was there to help out in the send off. Any way when you ask those in the area for help I though I would give a suggestion. Thanks again for all you are doing.
Well it went ok until we ran out of boxes and stuff to put in them. We packed up around 200 care packages -
Have to punch holes in the chip bags. Just a pin hole. We were warned by our donor (Frito-Lay gave about 14 boxes of stuff for packing) that if we didn't that they would pop when they flew over in an unpressurized cargo hold-
Snugz, another donor gave 150 lip balms for the cause -
Had to wear the Gordon to show off it's proud military heritage :D
Hopefully we will collect more names so we can get them shipped out! Only have about 20 names so far.
